Get To Know Hydroquinone

For 50+ years, dermatologists like Dr. Murad have prescribed hydroquinone because it quickly and effectively targets hyperpigmentation.

Hydroquinone is a pigment lightener that fades dark spots, age spots, melasma and post-acne marks. It works by inhibiting tyrosinase, the enzyme that produces the pigment melanin. (Melanin is the pigment that gives your skin its color.)

Dr. Murad, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of the award-winning Murad skincare system, developed his bestselling Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum with 2.0% hydroquinone—the highest percentage you can buy without a prescription.

“The 2% hydroquinone in our Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum is the powerhouse that fades dark spots, but we take it a step further with exfoliating glycolic acid, protective antioxidants and hydrating ingredients for better efficacy,” says Dr. Murad.

Hydroquinone isn’t a “one and done” treatment for dark spots. UV light is a known dark spot trigger and can cause dark spots to re-occur or re-darken. If you want stubborn dark spots to fade away, you must be diligent about wearing an SPF of 30 or above every day (even when you see those gray skies on the horizon).

Reapplying sunscreen every two hours and wearing protective clothing (think highly fashionable wide-brimmed hat) will add an extra level of protection to keep current and future spots at bay.
