In the mid-80s,
Dr. Murad began to notice a shift in priorities for his patients.
While large numbers still came in for classic dermatology treatment
(acne, skin cancer, psoriasis, etc.), equally large numbers were interested
in preventive skincare, particularly as it applied to the signs of
aging.
Dr. Murad Introduces
First Products
Sensing a trend too
large to ignore, by 1987, Dr. Murad had developed his first three
products, some of the earliest cosmeceuticals ever to appear on the
market: Oily Prone Skin Formula, Skin Smoothing Cream, and Age Spot
and Pigment Lightening Gel. He called his line Murad and so began
a journey that would completely change the skincare field in general
as well as dermatology as it is practiced today.
Upgraded, sophisticated
descendants of the three initial products are still strong sellers
today. At present, Murad Skincare boasts over sixty consumer skincare
products along with many professional-strength treatments for estheticians
and dermatologists.
First Medically
Supervised Day Spa
At the
helm of an equally important trend, Dr. Murad also opened the first
medically supervised day spa, named ‘A Sense of Self’
in 1988 in Brentwood, California. The spa stayed open until 1994,
after which he moved the operation to the Murad Spa in 1995 to its
present El Segundo location.
