Diaper rash is marked by red, puffy and tender skin in the diaper region—buttocks,
thighs and genitals. It is primarily an inflammatory reaction to irritants and is more
common after solid foods are added to your baby's diet, when breast-feeding mothers
eat certain foods or when your baby is taking antibiotics. Other factors that can
lead to diaper rash include continuously wet or infrequently changed diapers
(irritation from stool and urine), diarrhea and using tight and/or plastic pants to
cover diapers). Diaper rash can lead to secondary infections that require prescription
medications. When severe, it is followed by fever, blisters or boils, pus or weeping
discharge and extends beyond the diaper area.

After a diagnosis of diaper rash, we prescribe a simple prevention and treatment
plan that generally yields fast results—including an immediate relief for much of
your baby’s discomfort.
