Celebrate Independence Day: 8 Tips to a Fun Fourth of July

July 4th is the holiday event of the summer. No Fourth of July would be complete without family, friends, food and—of course—your community’s fireworks show.  The Fourth of July has become more than a celebration of our nation’s independence, it’s also a celebration of summer and a wonderful chance to connect with family, friends and neighbors.

With so many festive July 4th options, it can be difficult deciding what to do or where to go. So we’ve put together 8 ideas that we hope will make things a little easier for you, whether you plan to go out or stay home.

Backyard Barbecue

One of the best things to do on the Fourth of July is to have a backyard barbeque. Nothing says summer like a good old-fashioned BBQ. Hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob and watermelon. And one of those colorful cakes decorated like an American flag too.

Block Party

Turn a traditional backyard barbecue into an all-out block party with friends, family and neighbors. Assign each participating household a certain style of food or drink and keep the party moving between houses.

Plan a Picnic

Take your BBQ on the road and set up a picnic in a park, at the beach or perhaps in your favorite nature spot. Prepare your BBQ favorites and fixinings—or if a grill is not available—bring along a prepared meal.  Try your hand at making fried chicken that night before – it’s easier than you think and it is center of many classic summertime picnic spreads.  And to keep the crowd healthy and happy, remember your basic food safety rules when you’re packing food to go—keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold.

Hit up a Ball Game

There’s nothing as American as baseball (except maybe apple pie). Celebrate this patriotic day by taking in a ballgame with family and friends. Bonus: A lot of baseball stadiums do epic fireworks shows as part of the entertainment.

Go to a Parade

Marching bands, flags and festive floats are an iconic symbol of hometown USA. Parades bring a community together. Small towns and large cities across America line the streets to see floats, horses, cheerleaders, and marching bands pass by. Wave that flag proudly and don’t forget to wear red, white and blue!

Watch a Fireworks Show

Instead creating a potentially dangerous (and in many areas illegal) fireworks display at home, attend a public fireworks display. Nothing says Fourth of July like a spectacular fireworks show. From high-tech, choreographed shows… to old-school retro displays, this is the perfect way to end your day.

See a Movie

Head over to a nice air conditioned movie theater to take in a fun, summer blockbuster. Fourth of July has historically been the day movie studios release some of their biggest and most action-packed movies.

Attend a Concert

We’re not talking about a rock concert at an over-priced venue. Many cities plan their own July 4th concerts or music festivals at local parks or public gathering spots. And when the sun goes down, the fireworks come up! Ahh… the sights and sounds of a perfect summer holiday.

No matter what you do (How many of these can you squeeze into one day?), be safe, have fun and don’t forget your sunblock. Happy Independence Day everyone!
