Sun damage creates a cascade of destructive chemical
reactions and structural changes within the skin. Unstable
molecules born from these reactions, often called free
radicals, are the primary agents responsible for damage
at the cellular level that we eventually see as dryness,
dullness, roughness, sagging and unwanted pigmentation.
The body is naturally equipped to defend itself against free
radicals through the use of antioxidant molecules that
neutralize them. Because neutralization depletes the body
of antioxidants, our supply must be constantly replenished
to maintain a healthy defense.
While some antioxidants are generated by the body itself,
Vitamin C—the most commonly used antioxidant in the
body—must come into our system through diet,
supplementation and topical application.
